I come from a small place in Atlantic Canada where there isn’t a Starbucks on every corner. I remember the first time I ever had a Cinnamon Dolche Latte. I was away for the weekend in Halifax, it was heaven. For a long time, this was my go to order every time i went because, let be honest, reading the menu board doesn’t always make sense lol.

Fast Forward 10 years and I have a new favorite drink at Starbucks. The caramel macchiato. I love the combination of vanilla and caramel. The only thing I don’t love is the price tag of $5.69 for a grande. So, I thought I would set out trying to recreate it at home.

I asked my boyfriend for a Coffee Ninja for Christmas. I’m not really a coffee drinker, so I didn’t have a coffee maker at home. Before Christmas, I only ever drank green tea at home. I actually gave up coffee for 3 years before my love of iced coffee brought me back last April.

I have read how hard the coffee pod machines are hard to clean and that turned me off wanting one of those. I could have gotten an espresso machine, but the versatility of the Ninja won me over. With visions of iced coffee,  lattes and macchiato’s dancing around my head, it got added to the Christmas list.

I use filtered bottled water because the water in our municipality tastes awful. The ninja has an option to heat up the water first to make your drink hotter, which is often where traditional coffee makers fall short. Often the difference between coffee made at home and at a local coffee shop is the temperature of the water.  I also use Starbucks beans.

I start by adding two small scoops to the reusable filter. I add 1 tablespoon of homemade vanilla syrup to a cup and setting it to brew on the Specialty 4 oz setting.

I use slightly less than 1 cup of milk and heat it up in the microwave for 45 seconds. Than I use the built in milk frother to aerate the milk.

I love adding the espresso mixture and watching it mix with the milk.  Macchiato translated means “marked milk”

I top mine with home made caramel sauce, but you can also use store bought caramel sauce.

  • 2 small scoops espresso
  • 1 tbsp vanilla syrup
  • 1 cup milk
  • Caramel Sauce for drizzle.

Add 2 small scoops of espresso to brew basket. Add 1 vanilla syrup to measuring cup and set in place to brew.

Press ‘Specialty (concentrated) 4 OZ’ button,

While  coffee is brewing, place milk in a large mug. Microwave 45 sec. Froth for 30 seconds.

Add coffee to frothed milk.

Top with caramel.
